Snow Mentor Kickoff in New York

Stoked’s Snow Mentor: New York program officially entered its seventh season this past Saturday, January 7! Thanks to our partner organization Children of Promise and our amazing staff and volunteers, 28 students from City Polytechnic High School and Brooklyn School of Collaborative Studies spent the day practicing their S-Curves at Belleayre Mountain.

Not only do students and volunteers learns this invigorating action sport together, but each program day there’s a theme to support a positive structure around the experience. Saturday’s theme was creating vision for one’s future.

Students and volunteers spent 4.5 hours on the slopes and all but four students were able to ditch the bunny slope and ride the lifts by then end of the day. Eight students were returning Stokers, having snowboarded with us last year, and these guys and girls were hitting up the blues and blacks and even the park. Yes folks, there’s a steep learning curve for Stoked snowboarders.

Food was generously provided by Hickory BBQ and Kind. Special thanks to our photographer for the day, Meghan McGarry. Below are some of her awesome shots; more to come!

Burton Snowboard Setup Available for Bidding

December 14th, 2011 by Stoked Alex
Comment

As part of our Stoked for the Holidays end of year fundraising campaign, Stoked is auctioning off a men’s Burton snowboarding setup from their 2012 line, including:

  • Aftermath Board. In the bleak haze of post-rocker Armageddon there exists a crew of riders seeking the snappy suspension and drive of camber. Leading the charge are Marko Grilc, Christian Haller, and the Burton Aftermath. Energized to attack all terrain, the Aftermath unveils Squeezebox, an entirely new concept in core dynamics. Torsionally soft with no loss of snap, the result is a poppier board that can be powered up and manipulated with less effort.
  • Moto Boots. More riders rock the Burton Moto™ than any boot on the planet. Simply put, it’s soft, comfortable, and easy to use. Speed Zone™ lacing lets you dust everyone in the sprint for first chair—without stressing over knots, tangles, or loose laces. The heat-moldable Imprint™ liner offers the warmth and comfort of a custom glove-like fit, while the upgrade to Shrinkage™ is actually a good thing, reducing the footprint for easier board control.
  • Mission EST bindings. Nobody’s more critical of their bindings than Jeremy Jones. The one he deems worthy is the Burton Mission EST™. Rugged, cushioned, and reliable, it offers nuke-proof performance backed by a decade of destruction. From parks to pillows, the SensoryBED™ cushions, flexes, and feels like nothing you’ve felt before while a no-nonsense options package trickles heli-grade tech down to day ticket prices.

The winning bidder will be able to choose their proper sizes for each of the three items above. Bid on the package here and help support Stoked. Bidding ends on Monday, December 19th at 3:02 PM EST.

Thanks to Burton for donating this great setup to Stoked!

How do you teach someone that the more you fall the more opportunities there are to get back up? By going through it yourself. Here’s a rundown of the 2012 Snow Mentor program!

The Role of a Volunteer

Sport volunteers are an essential part of Stoked. In fact, we wouldn’t function without you guys and we are extremely grateful for your continued support. Volunteers are expected to teach (and mentor, if applicable) youth to snowboard while creating an encouraging and supportive environment for them. In addition volunteers should be positive role models and ambassadors of Stoked values for the youth.

Equipment: What we Have

We provide all necessary equipment (boards, boots, helmets, goggles, jackets, snow pants and gloves) for the youth and you. If you have your own snow gear by all means feel free to use it but Stoked is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Snacks and lunch are also provided but if you have special dietary needs please plan to BYO.

Where/When New York:

We go to Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills. The mountain is about two hours by bus with pick-ups at the Atlantic Center in Brooklyn at 6am and in Chelsea, Manhattan, at 21st Street and 6th Ave. at 6:30am. We return to those same locations between 7-7:30pm. Dates are as follows:

Jan. 7, Jan. 21, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 25, Mar. 3

Where/When Los Angeles:

We go to Snow Summit in Los Angeles. Snow Summit is about two hours by bus with a pick-up at Stoked Los Angeles Headquarters (1930 Wilshire Boulevard) at 6:45am. Dates are as follows:

Jan. 29, Feb. 12, Feb. 26, Mar. 4, Mar. 11, Mar. 18

*Dates are subject to change for Los Angeles.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED: Email volunteer@stoked.org and we will send you necessary materials to register for trips.

Thank you, we’re looking forward to shredding with you guys this winter!
