Stoked is very excited to feature an original work by renowned artist Purvis Young in its Stoked on Spring event on May 25th at DRIVE IN in Chelsea. The piece is entitled The System all Around Us, which was painted by Purvis in 1992. We are very appreciative of the Skot Foreman Fine Arts Gallery for making this generous donation! Below is a short write up about Purvis Young.
Purvis Young: (February 4th, 1973 – April 20th, 2010) An American Artist, born in Liberty City, Florida and lived in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami, Florida. A self taught artist, Young communicated a social message with his work, depicting poverty, crime and other social issues of his hometown community. He painted on discarded objects as canvasses, including doors, cardboard and pieces of wood. He had an expressionist vision of urban life and mammoth output of over three decades transformed, a forgotten Miami neighborhood, into a destination for contemporary art aficionados.
