From Wednesday July 6 through Friday July 22, Stoked ran a pilot summer enrichment program at Achievement First Brooklyn High School. Following the Stoked Plus: Skateboard Build program, but condensed into a 13 day intensive, 12 rising sophomore and juniors constructed their own skateboard decks from scratch.

In addition to Skateboard Build, students went on two professional visits as a part of the Stoked on Skills program. In visiting Barclays Capital and Niketown NY, these 12 youth got an inside look at the daily lives and working environments of employees, and gained exposure to the professional world.

At the end of this three-week intensive program, students walked away with an art credit, a P.E. credit, and their very own personalized skateboard deck. Director of College Readiness at A.F. and Stoked advocate Vanessa Jackson remarked that in comparison to the normal school day at Achievement First, which is a very intense academic environment during school hours, Stoked provides the “opportunity to do something totally different that combines art and the mastery of basic scientific principals through skateboarding workshops, and all in a very hands-on model. Then, with the deliverable or the outcome being a skateboard, while encouraging them to learn better skills of communication and teamwork… that has just been a very very different set of skills and set of experiences that what they get in the regular day at A.F.”
