Mentoring Activity: The 21st Annual Sand Sculpting Contest & Unity Day Celebration- Saturday, August 6th at 12:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Fifty mounds of sand on the Coney Island beach, from West 10th to West 12th Streets, will be prepared by the NYC Parks Dept. to be transformed into artistic creations by amateur sand sculptors during the Sand Sculpting Contest and Unity Day Celebration, presented by Astella Development Corp. and the Wildlife Conservation Society ’s New York Aquarium.
The amateur sculptors, coming from Coney Island, other parts of NYC, and beyond, will compete in five categories: Individual Adult, Individual Child, Adult Group, Child Group, and Mixed (Children and Adults). First, second, and third place winners in each category will be awarded generous cash prizes.
In addition to amateur sand sculptors, a professional will wow spectators with an unbelievable “How did he/she do that?!” creation in the sand, commissioned by the Aquarium.
Entertainers will rock the boardwalk while the contestants are at work. Face painting and craft activities for children will be part of the day’s festivities. In addition, along the boardwalk, local organizations will provide informational materials, along with give-a-aways.
On Saturday, August 6th from 12PM to 5PM, come to Coney Island Beach Boardwalk and participate in the 21st year of this celebration!

Mentoring Activity: Royal British Legion Band USA Tour 2011- Saturday, August 6 at 4:00 p.m.
The Royal British Legion Brass Band from England will be performing a free concert at the East River Park Amphitheatre in Manhattan as part of their tour of the North American Eastern and Mid-Atlantic Seaboard. This concert, entitled “Bridging the Atlantic”, is a celebration of the bands stay in New York and is considered by the band as an exciting opportunity to perform for the citizens of this great city and will be a highlight of their visit.
On Saturday, August 6th at 4PM, come to The East River Park and watch the band continue the long musical tradition of the British Brass Band, as featured in movies such as Brassed-off, and comprises 35 musicians—brass and percussion players—who perform a wide repertoire of music encompassing many genres of music from contemporary, traditional, light classical, patriotic, jazz, big band, and stage and screen themes. The band also features a number of talented soloists.
