Revelatory Surf Documentary opens in LA

White Wash, a documentary that dismantles the white surfer bro stereotype and reveals a succession of African American champions, opens Friday, September 9, in Los Angeles. The film features interviews with 10 time ASP World  Champion Kelly Slater, Stoked Co-founder Sal Masekela, surf legend Rob Machado, and more heavy-hitters in surfing.

Director Ted Wood combines original footage and testimony from pro-surfers and historians to tell the story of black surfers from Hawaii, Jamaica, Florida, and California. The film is about race and sports, the colonization of Hawaii, the effects of slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the history of surfing.

Grammy winner Ben Harper narrates and the score has original music by The Roots.
