At STOKED we teach youth the value of learning from mistakes and persevering through obstacles. What kind of organization would we be if we didn’t do that ourselves?
Admittedly STOKED has gone through growing pains, but under the leadership of Stoked Charlie and the epic support of Los Angeles volunteers and sponsors, STOKED Los Angeles is undergoing a positive transformation we are proud and inspired to witness. Here’s a synopsis of the accomplishments STOKED Los Angeles has racked up in the last year.
Back in March we held our first-ever Los Angeles action-sports fundraiser, the Trishredathon, which was a day of snowboarding, skating and surfing. Participants raised more than $12,000 for STOKED Los Angeles, and the fruits of their fundraising is evident in the quality of programs in Los Angeles.
70 kids went through Snow Mentor this winter, with the awesome perk of snowboarding with guest mentor Travis Rice for a day.
We expanded the after-school skateboard build program that began in New York to the Edward Roybal Learning Center this spring, with more than 40 kids attending the program and Stoked Charlie teaching.
At Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, Stoked Charlie ran a photo program for 13 kids, and so far 11 kids have participated in Skate Mentor. On Skate Mentor day 2, stokers got a history lesson from Dogtown legend Jeff Ho.
In the spring Stoked to Serve partnered with FoLAR for the LA River clean-up, and Los Angeles is looking forward to more service days next fall.
In addition to growing its programs, STOKED Los Angeles ‘HQ,’ or just HQ as it’s known to locals, is becoming a community hub with Stokers coming and going from the office regularly and new initiatives like ‘Tuesday Cruise Day’ popping up. On Tuesday afternoons Stokers meet at HQ and hunt for new spots to skate in downtown LA with Stoked Charlie and a handful of volunteers.
Awesome work Los Angeles, you guys are killing it!
