African American Icons: Harry Edwards

African American Icons: Harry Edwards

This month we’ve asked our coaches to tell us about an African American role model to celebrate Black History Month.

First up is NY Coach Zach, who explains how Dr. Harry Edwards has influenced him:

Dr. Harry Edwards has been a huge influence on the way I conduct much of my work. In his publications he articulated the underlying philosophy behind the way I teach and understand sports. The NY Times magazine has written that ‘no other single figure in sports has done as much to make the country aware that the problems of the larger culture are recapitulated in sports, that the arena is no sanctuary from drugs, racism and corruption.’

Edwards gave up a career as an athlete to become a scholar who studies the way sports and issues of racial and economic injustice intersect. He has fundamentally countered the notion that sports and politics do not mix. I try and do much the same thing in my work, teaching college students studying sports management. I also try to expose the students in STOKED to social and political issues that intersect with action sports.”
