How do I become a mentor?

You must be 25 years of age or older. You must fill out an online application, come in to interview with a Stoked staff member, pass a background check and our mentor evaluation. Once you do that, you make a personal contribution of $100 and fundraise for the year.

Where do you go surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding?

In New York: We surf usually at Far Rockaway in Queens. Sometimes we go to Long Beach. We go skateboarding at various skate parks in Manhattan. We go snowboarding at Belleyare Mountain. In Los Angeles, we skate at various skate parks near downtown LA, surf in Santa Monica, and snowboard at Snow Summit.
Is there a certain skill level needed for these sports?
There are no skills necessary. Most participants are beginners. But if you’re advanced at a sport, we just ask that you are patience with your youth and the rest of the group.

Why do I have to fundraise?

The short answer is, we look at your 1 year of mentoring similar to that of running in a triathlon or doing a marathon and raising money for AIDS or Breast Cancer. The exception is that the cause you’re raising money for is Mentoring. You also get to snowboard, skateboard, and surf for a year with a cool teen. The long answer is that these sports and running the programs are expensive. We ask that mentors fundraise their portion of the program so that we can ensure that the youth don’t have to pay anything. We also think that as a mentor in Stoked and a fundraiser, you have even more of a vested interest in the success of your youth and Stoked.
