Becoming a Mentor
General Requirements
- Be at least 25 years old
- Commit to all program and training dates
- Pass criminal background check
- Be enthusiastic, motivated, driven and open
Application
You can simply fill out an application here. We will schedule an interview with you a few months before the season starts.
Interview
The interview, led by one of our staff, will take approximately one hour. We will learn more about you, your background and why you want to become a STOKED mentor. We ask that you bring a check for $18 for fingerprinting and a copy of your driver’s license. If you are in Los Angeles, please bring a copy of your driver’s insurance.
Background Check
During this process, we check your references, send your fingerprints to the FBI for the background check and perform an evaluation of your interview.
Mentor Orientation
The final step before deciding whether you are fit to become a mentor, will require you to attend the Stoked Mentor Orientation. This mentor orientation is also our coaching training that gives you the foundation to become a mentor. In this four hour training you will learn tools to connect better to yourself and to your mentee. We conclude this training with a mixer so that we can learn more about you in a relaxed setting.
Decision
During this process, we initially see if there is a mentee that shares the same gender, interests and personality. We will then inform you if you are accepted, waitlisted or rejected from the program. If you are rejected, it is because we feel that you do not meet the requirements to become a mentor. In the event that Stoked deems you ineligible to participate in the program, understand that a specific reason may not be provided.
Mentor Training
Once you have been accepted into STOKED, you will go through a mentor training that covers the basics of what it takes to mentor a teen, how to communicate with them, and how to deal with difficult situations.
Matching
After the training, we match you up with your mentee during a matching day. The matching day is when all new mentoring pairs get together and learn about the programs, each other and the various opportunities STOKED has to offer.
