Step 01 / What we believeRead this part slowly

Belonging is not handed to you. It is built.

We are not a charity you give to. We are a chain you join. Twenty one years in, that is not a new direction. It is what this has always been, said out loud.

Belonging gets built through a lifestyle that gives you an identity, an identity that gives you a people, and a person who shows up long enough to change your life. Snowboarding put young people on a mountain that was never meant for them. Skateboarding turned an empty street into a home. The sport was never the point. The belonging was.

Adults mentor coaches. Coaches mentor young people. Nobody ages out. Everybody moves up.

And we open the gated worlds too, so belonging is never reserved for the people already inside. Three generations, connected by the same crisis, healed by the same cure. Belonging is a two way cure, and the person who shows up to give it gets it back.

Step 02 / The problemWhat you would be joining to fix

The disease is loneliness.

Not their loneliness. Everyone’s. The kid eating lunch in the bathroom stall. The 22 year old with four thousand followers and nobody to call at 2am. The adult reading this with a full calendar and an empty weekend.

70%

The collapse in time young people spend with friends in person. Ages 15 to 24 went from about 150 minutes a day in 2003 to about 40 in 2020. And most of the adults reading this are carrying a quieter version of the same thing.

US Surgeon General, Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation, 2023

Loneliness is not a personality flaw. It is a missing crew problem. You do not fix a missing crew with an app, a webinar, or a pamphlet. You fix it with a reason to show up. A ramp. A wave. A hill. A stretch of asphalt.

No lonely kid has ever signed up for a belonging program. Nobody wants to be the loneliness kid. But every kid wants to land the thing their friends said they could not land.
Plate 02 / The research21 billion friendships

Harvard mapped what actually moves a young person’s life, and found two reasons people stay disconnected.

Cause 01Exposure

They never meet each other at all.

What a field trip, a career day, or a guest speaker fixes. Almost every youth program in America stops here.
Cause 02Friending bias

They meet, and still do not become friends.

This one survives the field trip. It only breaks under repeated, shared stakes time. Falling down in front of each other, weekly, for months.
20%More adult income for low income children raised in high connectedness places. Economic connectedness is among the strongest predictors of upward mobility ever measured.

Chetty et al., Nature, 2022

Everyone else buys the introduction. We buy the thirty three weeks after it, which is the only part the research says works.
Step 03 / The chainDrawn to spec

The cure is a chain.

Everyone names the cure. Almost nobody says what belonging is made of. It is not a room. It is not a program. It is not a feeling that arrives on its own. It is a person who shows up long enough to change your life.

The coach is the load bearing link. A young person cannot get more from an adult than that adult has to give, so the coach is who we invest in first. A chain fails at whichever link nobody bothered to maintain.

Follow both dotted lines back. Young people grow up and become coaches. Coaches build a career and come back as the adults who mentor the next one. That is not a nice story we tell at the end, it is the operating model. Nobody ages out. Everybody moves up.

Step 04 / What we ask of youAnd what we call things

Three rules and five words.

This part matters more than it looks. Every real crew has its own language, and learning it is most of what joining one means.

Rule one. The coach gets paid. This is a real job with a real wage, for a young person who deserves to earn while they make a difference. They build career skills nobody hands out for free, getting paid to do work that changes somebody else's life and their own trajectory at the same time.
Rule two. You join a class, not a form. Roles run in , two to four times a year. Induction happens with other people or it does not happen.
Rule three. Nobody ages out. Youth become coaches, coaches become mentors. Leaving is not a stage of this.

The five words, so you are not guessing later:

  • Stoker Anyone in the chain. One name, no hierarchy of belonging.
  • Coach 18 to 30, paid and trained. Most came up through the program.
  • Mentor 35 and up. Mentors the coaches, not the kids.
  • Guide 21 and up. Shows up for sessions, rolls on trips.
  • Igniter A monthly giver. Steady is the whole point.

We do not say volunteer. We say Guide. It is a small thing that turns out not to be small.

Step 05 / Your rolePick one, change it later

So where do you fit?

You have read what we believe, what is wrong, and how the chain actually works. Now pick the link you want to be. Nobody is locked in, most people hold more than one over time, and every role in the chain can also fund it. We will ask about that after you choose.

Step 06 / Sign onThe part that makes it real

Sign your name to it.

This is the difference between a mailing list and a membership. It is not a contract and it is not a payment. It is you saying out loud that you can be counted on.

“I agree to be an active part of this chain when it needs me.”

Once a year, in one of five ways. Pick whichever fits the life you actually have:

If life gets busy, you go inactive. You never go out. Nobody is removed from this for having a hard year, and there is no reapplying. That is the actual rule, not a sentiment.
You’re in.

Welcome to the chain, Stoker. You joined as a member, backing wherever it is needed most. Your cohort date is your renewal date, and we will tell you when it comes around.

What happens nowNo action needed

We are building your portal. It is where your sessions, your cohort and the people you are connected to will live. It is not finished yet, so a real person is going to email you at the address you gave us to say hello and tell you what happens next.

Nothing else is required of you today. Watch your inbox.

One more thing, and it is optional. Showing up is the commitment. Backing it monthly is what lets us promise a young person a coach in October and still have one there in May.
